Adolphe Boucneau werkte voor de familie Rothschild

Uit een Engelse thesis (The English Rothschild Family in the Vale of Aylesbury their houses, collections, and collecting activity 1830-1900 van Nicola Ann Pickering) blijkt dat Adolphe Boucneau marmer leverde aan de familie Rothschild voor minstens twee kastelen. Het gaat om Mentmore House en Aston Clinton House, beide in Buckinghamshire. Hij zou voor hen gewerkt hebben van 1856 tot 1864! Deze familie de Rothschild is de Engelse tak van de van oorsprong Joods-Duitse, bankiersfamilie.

Dankzij de sympatieke medewerking van het Rothschild Archief konden we de documenten bekijken die zij van Adolphe Boucneau in hun archief hebben bewaard. Het gaat concreet om facturen en bestaalbewijzen van het werk dat Adolphe deed in de twee kastelen ('houses') van vooraanstaande leden van de familie Rothschild, nl. voor baron Mayer de Rothschild voor het Mentmore House en voor Sir Anthony de Rothschild voor het Aston Clinton House! We kregen bovendien de toelating om een van deze prachtige documenten op deze website te tonen, waarvoor we hen erg dankbaar zijn!

Mentmore House
Zowel de inkomsthal als de grote zaal van Mentmore House (ook Mentmore Towers genoemd naar de vier hoekorens) werden luxueus ingericht, speciaal om de kunstverzameling van baron Mayer de Rothschild te etaleren. De hal, uitgevoerd in Caen Stone (een fijne zandsteen) en geplaveid met Siciliaanse en Belgisch marmer, Rouge Royal, uitgevoerd door Adolphe Boucneau, verwijst naar de Italiaanse Renaissance. De hal was speciaal ontworpen voor de verzameling marmeren beeldhouwwerk die Mayer uit Florence - ook via kunsthandelaar Aldolphe Boucneau - had verworven!

De 'Grand Hall' was een echte pronkkamer, een 'Schatzkammer'! Aan de wanden hingen onder meer oude Vlaamse wandtappijten en de indrukwekkende schouw zou afkomstig zijn uit de woning van Rubens in Antwerpen! Adolphe Boucneau was verantwoordelijk voor al het marmerwerk en de reconstructie van de indrukwekkende marmeren schouwmantel!

Hiernaast het laatste document uit deze lijst. Het gaat om een factuur uit 1864 voor het herstellen en herplaatsen van een schouwmantel uit marmer van Rance, gericht aan baron Meyer de Rothschild. Blijkbaar werd de schouwmantel in Mentmore ingepakt in kisten en getransporteerd naar Londen om daar in het atelier van Adolphe te worden opgeknapt, aangepast en gepolijst. Totale kostprijs: meer dan 46 toenmalige ponden!
Dit is een van de mooiste documenten uit de lijst, met de handtekening van Adolphe Boucneau! (Klik op de afbeelding voor een groter formaat - Reproduction with the permission of The Trustees of The Rothschild Archive Trust Limited).

In de andere facturen (de meesten uit 1858) vinden we ondermeer ook nog het maken van een wapenschild, een 'coat of arms', 'after old Florentine style', het reinigen en polijsten van oudere standbeelden en bustes en heel veel metselwerk !


Aston Clinton House
Aston Clinton House lag zo'n 7 mijl van Mentmore House. De familie de Rothschild kocht het domein in 1849. Het was Anthony de Rothschild die rond 1851 in het kasteel ging wonen en het pand verbouwde. De renovatie en aanpassing gebeurde door Joseph Paxton, dezelfde architect als bij het Mentmore House. Ook de aannemer was dezelfde, nl. George Myers. Het werd niet zo'n opvallend kasteel dan het Mentmore House. Sir Anthony was blijkbaar wat meer bescheiden dan zijn broer Mayer de Rothschild...

Anthony de Rothschild behield gedeeltelijk het aanwezige Italiaanse klassieke interieur, maar voegde ook modieuze Franse Rococo-elementen toe. Ook voor dit kasteel leverde Adolphe Boucneau marmerwerk en prachtige marmeren schouwmantels.

Adolphe Boucneau worked for the Rothschild Family

From an English thesis (The English Rothschild family in the Vale of Aylesbury Their houses, collections, and collecting activity 1830-1900 by Nicola Ann Pickering) we know that Adolphe Boucneau sold marble to the Rothschild family for two castles. It involves Mentmore House and Aston Clinton House, both in Buckinghamshire. He would have worked for them from 1856 to 1864!

Thanks to the sympathetic cooperation of the Rothschild Archive we could take a look at the documents they have in the archive concerning Adolphe Boucneau. These documents are invoices and receipts of the works Adolphe did in the two castles (houses) of senior members of the Rothschild family, for Baron Mayer de Rothschild for Mentmore House and Sir Anthony de Rothschild for Aston Clinton House! We also received permission to show one of these documents on this website, for which we are very grateful!

Mentmore House
Both the entrance hall and the Grand Hall of Mentmore House (also Mentmore Towers named after the four hoekorens) were luxuriously furnished, especially to showcase the art collection of Baron Mayer de Rothschild. The hall, executed in Caen Stone (fine sandstone) and paved with Sicilian and Belgian marble, Rouge Royal, conducted by Adolphe Boucneau refers to the Italian Renaissance. The hall was designed specifically for the collection of marble sculptures that Mayer bought in Florence - also via art dealer Aldolphe Boucneau!
The "Grand Hall" was a true treasure room, a "Schatzkammer"! On the walls hung include old Flemish tapestry and the impressive chimney piece would come from the Rubens House in Antwerp! Adolphe Boucneau was responsible for all the marble works and the reconstruction of the impressive marble fireplace mantle!

Aston Clinton House
Aston Clinton House is about 7 miles from Mentmore House. The Rothschild family bought the property in 1849. It was Anthony de Rothschild who went to live in the castle around 1851 and refurbished the building. The renovation was done by Joseph Paxton, the same architect that builded Mentmore House. It was not such a striking castle than Mentmore House. Sir Anthony was apparently more modest than his brother Mayer de Rothschild...
Anthony de Rothschild retained partially the present Italian classic interior, but also added fashionable French Rococo elements. For this castle Adolphe Boucneau did the marble works and made marble chimney pieces.




Adolphe Boucneau a travaillé pour la famille de Rothschild

D'une thèse (The English Rothschild family in the Vale of Aylesbury Their houses, collections, and collecting activity 1830-1900 by Nicola Ann Pickering), nous savons que Adolphe Boucneau a vendu du marbre à la famille Rothschild pour deux châteaux. Elle implique Mentmore House et Aston Clinton House, à la fois dans le Buckinghamshire. Il aurait travaillé pour eux 1856-1864!

Graçe à la coopération sympathique des Archives Rothschild nous avons pu voir les documents qu'ils ont dans les archives concernant Adolphe Boucneau. Ces documents sont des reçus et des factures pour les travaux Adolphe a fait dans les deux châteaux ('Houses') des membres de la famille Rothschild, à savoir pour Baron Mayer de Rothschild pour Mentmore House et Sir Anthony de Rothschild pour Aston Clinton House! Nous avons également reçu la permission de montrer un de ces documents sur ce site, dont nous sommes très reconnaissants!

Mentmore House
Tant le hall d'entrée et le Grand Hall of Mentmore House (également Mentmore Towers nommé d'après les quatre hoekorens) ont été luxueusement meublées, en particulier pour mettre en valeur la collection d'art du baron Mayer de Rothschild. Le hall, exécuté en pierre de Caen (grès fin) et pavée de marbre sicilien et belge, Rouge Royal, dirigé par Adolphe Boucneau, fait référence à la Renaissance italienne. La salle a été spécialement conçu pour la collection de sculptures en marbre qui Mayer acheté à Florence - également par le marchand d'art Aldolphe Boucneau!
La "Grande Galerie" était une vraie salle de trésor, un "Schatzkammer"! Sur les murs suspendus comprennent vieille tapisserie flamande et une impressionnante pièce de cheminée qui viendrait de la Maison de Rubens à Anvers! Adolphe Boucneau était responsable de tout le travail en marbre et la reconstruction du marbre impressionnant manteau de cheminée!

Aston Clinton House
Aston Clinton House est à environ 7 miles de Mentmore House. La famille Rothschild a acheté la propriété en 1849. Il était Anthony de Rothschild qui est allé vivre dans le château autour de 1851 et a rénové le bâtiment. La rénovation a été faite par Joseph Paxton, le même architecte que bâtissaient Mentmore House. Ce ne fut pas un tel château frappant que Mentmore House. Sir Anthony était apparemment plus modeste que son frère Mayer de Rothschild...
Anthony de Rothschild a retenu partiellement la présente intérieur classique italien, mais a également a ajouté des éléments de Rococo français. Pour ce château Adolphe Boucneau a fait les œuvres en marbre et un manteau de cheminée.
